I have worked at Wal-Mart for 11 years. I went to Wal-Mart with my 18 year old daughter so she could put in an application. Back in the day of written applications, she wanted me to go to the back with her to put in her application (she had never applied for a job before). To get back there Doris, personel manager told me I had to fill out an application. She knew me, told her I didn't want a job. She said fill it out they wouldn't call me.
Before I got home she called. She called 4x's in next 2 days. I took a temp. Christmas job to shut her up and maybe get daughter a job. They never called daughter.
In Feb. I asked when temp Christmas help was allowed to go home. They told me I was to be let go after Christmas, they had just not said what year.
I started in jewelry, could not pierce baby's ear. In Feb I went overnight as softline processor. Worked that 2 months, went to evening zoner in men's wear. Worked that 2 months, went to day assistant to zone manager over men's, boy's, and ladies. Worked that for 3 months and went to dept. manager over men's and boy's.
I was dm over 23 and 24 for 8 years. I had open heart surgery and knew I was not as fast as I was before. I had to do all my freight, price changes, mods, swaz, everything except evening zoner. I had one 40 hour person for both depts; all the help I had. We are a supercent that sold almost as much as the stores in our area in large towns in the men's area. I told management that I wanted to step down for the good of my area. They gave it to someone 40 years younger than me; 5 x's as slow; and did not care in the least for MY area and sales dropped to more less than 1/2. It took a year for me to stop caring about that area. My zoner, I had trained to take over my area. She would have been so good. They didn't give it to her.
Here 2 years later; She is my boss. She is leader over backroom team, second shift. I applied for it when I found out she had put in for leader. I did not see how they could deny her. I love it. We are on 2nd shift - 4 pm until 1 am. The days she works are great; we get everthing done with no problem. The days she is off are hell. Nothing gets finished. I still love it.
At 66 years of age, I am in better shape than I have been in 10 years. Open heart and I can still keep up with the 30 year olds. Thanks to the work I do.
If I retired, I probably be dead in 1 year. I would sit down, read, play on computer and do nothing physical. I would also be bored to death, how much reading and playing on computer can one person do.
Thank God for Wal-Mart.
